چکیده

INTRODUCTION Benign cervical goiters rarely cause acute airway obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 64-year-old woman of African descent who presented with acute shortness of breath. She required immediate intubation and later a total thyroidectomy for a benign cervical multi-nodular goiter with no retrosternal tracheal compression. CONCLUSION Benign multi-nodular goiters are commonly left untreated once euthyroid. Peak inspiratory flow rates should be measured via spirometry in all goiters to assess the degree of tracheal compression. Once tracheal compression is identified, an elective total thyroidectomy should be performed to prevent morbidity and mortality from acute airway obstruction.

Multinodular Goiter Spontaneous Hemorrhage in ESRD Patients Result in Acute Respiratory Failure

Euthyroid multinodular goiters may lead to acute respiratory failure caused by airway obstruction or laryngotracheal compression. Here, we present a case admitted to the nephrologist with multinodular goiter spontaneous hemorrhage along with respiratory failure and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which required urgent surgical intervention. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with ESRD who...

Benign nodular goiter causing upper airway obstruction.

OBJECTIVE Benign nodular goiter (BNG) can cause narrowing of the upper airway. In some rare cases, obstruction of the upper airway also occurs. The following paper reports our experiences with regard to BNG patients who experienced obstruction of the upper airway. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively investigated the records of 13 patients with acute airway obstruction due to BNG who were...

Upper Airway Obstruction with a Large Calcified Substernal Benign Goiter

Upper tracheal obstruction, stridor and dispnea developed in a 53 year-old woman because of a large calcified benign goiter. There was a mass of 3 to 4 cm in size with calcification located on the right side of trachea and in the substernal region on the chest roentgenography. CT revealed bilaterally nodular substernal goiter and tracheal compression with the calcified nodule. Cytological findi...

Retrosternal goiter with posterior mediastinal extension surgery in a patient with superior vena cava obstruction through a classic neck incision; Case report

Intrathoracic goiters are usually located anteriorly, in the superior or anterior mediastinum, and are termed substernal or retrosternal goiters. Posterior mediastinal goiters are rare, about 10% of all intrathoracic goiters. Patients with retrosternal goiter usually have a visible or palpable cervical mass. In addition, tracheal deviation may be present with compression symptoms. Posterior med...
